From filming in the freezing lakes of Windermere to the fiery sands of the Taklamakan desert, Charlie relishes being in demanding environments and problem solving the challenges that arise. With a smile on his face and a camera on his shoulder, there is no place he’d rather be than out in the middle of nowhere with a few good mates and a banging story to tell.

Having studied Filmmaking at the University of the West of England, specialising in cinematography and factual filmmaking, Charlie started out in television as a junior camera operator for a production company in Bath. It was here that he cut his teeth in unscripted, filming VTs for BBC ones ‘The One Show’ and helping to set the shooting style for their weekly ‘One Big Thank You’ segment. He continued to work in-house assisting and operating on several history and travel shows before making the decision to go freelance; continuing his learning from a diverse range of mentors, backgrounds, and experiences.

He is currently working across the film and television industry in varying camera and electrical positions within factual, narrative, commercial, and promos. His exact roles differ from shoot to shoot and are based on his qualifications and experience in each type of production. He chooses to work in narrative and commercials as he loves the freedom and equipment that the bigger budgets bring but also because it requires him to continue working to the high standard from which his foundations are based. Narrative also allows him to learn the nuances of lighting and camera movement from experienced cinematographers, gaffers, and operators, furthering his understanding of the craft.

Charlie’s heart lies with Documentary. He has always had an affinity for the natural world and although he’s not 100% sure what his end goal is he knows it will have something to do with telling human stories in the natural world. Growing up playing in the woods, he was introduced to filmmaking through natural history programmes and mountain film festivals and finds his stylistic routes in the works of Chris Burkard, Renan Ozturk, and Taylor Rees. His plan is to continue working across all avenues of the industry, combining the best bits from all worlds to create a unique and fresh visual identity as he works towards his goal of one day becoming a recognised cinematographer and PD.

Kit List

Charlie loves his kit and is slowly building up his personal inventory so he can be ready at a moments notice for a whole range of shooting scenarios be that local of overseas. He is also very well connected to a large range of Bristol and South-West rental houses so sourcing the right kit for the job is never an issue.
